I went down to Charter’s office today to inquire about this $20/month offer they sent me a few weeks back. I figured that a bunch of channels and HBO or Showtime would be worth an extra $20/month on top of my $60/mo cable modem bill, along with a free, newer Roku box. I went in there thinking that this was too good to be true, and that I’d walk out of there quite surprised, and that’s exactly what happened.

As it turns out, that $20/month charge for streaming was if you had the discounted, promotional cost on the cable modem, namely the $40 I was paying for the first year ages ago. The cost for my $60/mo cable modem and the $20/mo streaming? $60/mo. No increase (except a couple of bucks in taxes). Yeah, I’m surprised, but in a good way. A free Roku box and a bunch of extra channels with a negligible increase in my bill? Well, OK, if you insist. They did say that I could cancel at any time since there isn’t a contract, but, umm, it’s not costing me anything (at least not now...) so why would I?

As much as people like to rip cable companies a new one, Charter has been surprisingly good to me. Faster Internet speeds without any cost increase, installation on Easter freaking Sunday of all days, free Roku and streaming, etc. Not that I approve of the cable industry’s monopolistic behaviours or their stance on net neutrality, but they seem to be a tad more customer focused than I remember from years past. Now if they can just stop calling me every 30 seconds or so when my bill is late...

I’m not a big fan of live streaming; I’ve been a TiVo customer for 15+ years now, and the idea of watching TV live is quite odd to me. I’ll have to figure out a way to combine the new Roku with some sort of recording device so that I catch any programs I’m not around to watch. Yeah, it won’t be as seamless as doing it via the TiVo box, but it’s a start. Maybe that tuner card I threw in the peecee will be of some use after all.

I can’t hate on Charter too much, we pay a total of $63/mo for a 65 x 5 connection, we own our own modem. I wish the upload speed was faster but it works for most of the things we do. Reliability is a little spotty, but most of this is avoided if you set your firewall to use different DNS servers. We used to have their TV package, but costs kept rising so we ditched it.
